Male Birth Control! I Don’t Know if I’m Excited or Not?!
Mark on May 5th 2009

Researchers in China have recently conducted a testosterone injection test on male subjects with a high degree of success. The monthly injections of testosterone are said to block the production of sperm, thus eliminating the possibility of pregnancy in their partners. There are no major side effects to report on and sperm count levels are said to return to normal levels after just six months! According to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism out of 100 test subjects only one male was able to conceive a child with his partner.
Though I’m not excited by the proposition of jabbing myself every month, I will be able to rest easy knowing no she devil, scorpion woman is going to trap me by not being diligent with her pill or poking holes in my condoms! I’m pro choice haha.
In all seriousness though, very promising discovery as a lot of woman have complications with current birth control methods such as the pill or more dangerous options like Depo-Provera. We don’t need our women any more crazy than they already are. Agreed ladies?

Swine Flu Watch: Google is tracking deaths
Mikael on Apr 27th 2009
I’m sure you have all heard about the Swine Flu pandemic that has been hapenning over the last few days. Well, God Google decided it would be a smart idea to track all the infections and bring panic to the world. The pink markers are suspect, the purple markers are confirmed, and deaths don’t have a black dot in the marker. The yellow one are suppose to represent negative… I think I see three of those.
Anyways, enjoy watching the virus spread…

How Much Power Can One Person Have?
Mikael on Apr 23rd 2009

You know how there are certain people in this world who can influence millions by just saying a few words? Well Oprah Winfrey is definitely one of those people… When Oprah announced that she is going to join Twitter (if you don’t know what Twitter is by now I suggest you check it out) back in mid-April, everyone knew that the online micro-blogging site would see a significant increase in traffic.
But according to market tracker Hitwise, traffic to Twitter went up 43% in a before and after survey of the Oprah Effect. On the day of her first “Tweet”, 37% of visits to Twitter.com were new visitors.
I think the term “Oprah Effect” should be added to the dictionary… How much power does one person need?

Stem Cell Transplant Axes Need of Insulin Needles for Diabetics!
Mark on Apr 15th 2009

Another high-five goes out to stem cell research yay!!
I don’t have the who and where, other than the study came from a US institution, but the results are promising none the less. Other operations have proven effective in fighting type 1 Diabetes but you needed a donor. This new method employs stem cells from the patients own body, meaning no more need for donor plasma. The cells are borrowed, modified in a lab and re injected in the patient. The process seems to reset the bodies immune system, stopping the body from attacking the islet cells that are responsible for the natural production of insulin in the body. Results are staggering, and though it’s not a cure for type 1, it offers some relief. Out of 23 test patients, 20 were able to come off their insulin shots for a period ranging from 1-4 yrs. Some side effects include pneumonia, hormone imbalances and infertility… and it has to be caught early on… but I think it’s still an important development. Thoughts?

TED Talks - Bonnie Bassler Discovers How Bacteria Communicate
Mikael on Apr 9th 2009
“Bonnie Bassler discovered that bacteria “talk” to each other, using a chemical language that lets them coordinate defense and mount attacks. The find has stunning implications for medicine, industry — and our understanding of ourselves.”
This is definitely worth the 18 minutes if you have any sort of interest in biology and chemistry.
