Uh Oh! Here Come the Robots…
Mikael on Oct 31st 2008
Robots with realistic human features are not anything “new” per say… but it starts getting pretty scary when those same robots can speak and make facial expression. A team of scientists from the University of Bristol in the UK have developed a software that analyzes facial expressions and transfers those expressions to the face of a Robot named Jules. Jules itself is pretty sweet, but adding these facial expressions adds a whole new element to the world of robots and just gives us a little taste of our future robot masters servants.
The video above is a demonstration of this technology in action… another couple of years and we wont be able to tell the difference between humans and robots.

The software is called Secondlight… To be honest Im not too convinced about the software’s function but I can definitely see how this can change the interactive component of Microsoft Surface… The video is worth the watch.

Just a quickie, on the topic of business and sustainability. Shipping is of obvious importance in today’s society, employing “planes, trains and automobiles”… and ships, it is currently a fossil fuel intensive industry. UPS is testing a fleet of hybrid hydraulic trucks beginning ‘09. The trucks are expected to be 50-70% more fuel efficient and will cut green house gas emissions by 40%! Not to mention the Return on Investment is only 3 years. Hopefully tests go well… and the rest of the fleet can be fitted.

Old News… But Still Amazing! This is Microsoft Surface
Mikael on Oct 30th 2008
This is Microsoft Surface. It was introduced to the world back in May of 2007 and the initial release was in April of this year. Now I might not be a Windows guy… but Bill Gates and the Microsoft team have developed something wonderful. Have a look at the commercial for Microsoft Surface and think of the possibilities…

Surf’s up! Wave Energy!!
Mark on Oct 29th 2008

This is renewable energy of another kind. A very creative alternative to other sustainable energy technologies, this is called a wave farm by a company called Pelamis Wave Power. It is in Portugal and called the Agucadoura. This is the first installation and there are three of these orangy-red tubes collecting energy from the waves. This farm generates enough power to electrify 1,500 homes. While the orangy-red tubes bob in the waves, pistons attached to a hydraulic pump on the sea floor generate electricity which is pumped back onto the grid via power lines lying on the sea floor. AMAZING! I just love seeing new and creative ideas for alternative energy… let us know what you guys think!
